The second of two ‘Working Collaboratively to Sustain Housing’ training sessions – held as a joint session for community housing providers and support provider staff – was held in Perth.
The first workshop was held in Mandurah.
A mix of local housing and support providers attended and learnt collaboratively throughout the day from each other as to develop their solutions to keep people housed. Representatives from Noongar Mia Mia, Moorditj Mia, Vinnies WA, St Patrick’s Community Support Centre, Mission Australia, Ruah and Housing Choices WA attended.
Session Guidance
Guiding and facilitating the session was specialist trainer, Leah Watkins from Housing Choices WA where she is responsible for ensuring tenant voices are heard and used to influence service delivery. She walked participants through the two gold standard approaches to facilitate better tenant outcomes namely, ‘Housing First’ for people moving from rough sleeping to permanent housing and the ‘Supportive Landlord’ approach supporting participants to ensure each strategy was tailored to their unique service delivery.
“Understanding how housing and support providers can work together to better support tenants and place them at the centre of decision making is critical to supporting sustainable tenancies” Paula O’Leary, Head of Policy and Sector Development, Shelter WA said.
Participants provided feedback on the session through survey forms.
“I got a lot out of today and look forward to putting what I’ve learnt into practice,” said one. “I am going to change my practice by collaborating with support providers and workers. I will also utilise case collaboration practice for tenancies/residents at risk and use the safeguarding scale when considering a termination,” wrote another. “Today has been invaluable for how I work moving forward. Brilliant and thank you.”
