Shelter WA and the WA Alliance to End Homelessness headed to Geraldton to participate in the Rural, Regional, Remote Women’s Network of Western Australia on Ending Homelessness in WA’s regions.
This was the fourth RRR Roundtable, with the program exploring relevant issues with a primary focus on rural, regional and remote Western Australia to develop recommendations and affect change.
The RRR Network engage with and advocate for Western Australian rural, regional and remote women to strengthen their economic and social security, inspire leadership and inform the gender equality policy with government, private sector, civil society and the media.
Solutions Focus
Lara Dalton MLA, Member for Geraldton, reflected on her story, pathways into home ownership and shared her confidence in the state government’s most recent All Paths Lead to a Home: Western Australia’s 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness 2020–2030.
Representing the WA Alliance to End Homelessness, John Berger gave an overview of Housing First, the shared community responsibility needed to end homelessness and how this has been done elsewhere, also reflecting on the Zero Project in Geraldton.
Addressing the current housing situation and its implications in the regions, Shelter WA Regional Engagement Manager Rhiannon Bristow-Stagg provided a brief overview of the regional engagement project and a suite of solutions that can be driven locally.
Elise Haddleton, Manager of Hear of My Experience (HOME) discussed the value of hearing from people with lived experience and shared new opportunities arising from the HOME project, supported by Shelter WA and the Sisters of St John of God. HOME aims for people with lived experience to support the delivery of better policy, programs, service responses and housing outcomes, and will involve several streams of work.
Outcomes
The event was attended by local RRR Network members and a range of local services from the Mid West and Gascoyne, including Shelter WA members Regional Alliance West, Murchison Region Aboriginal Corporation, Carnarvon Family Support Services, Fusion, Centacare Family Services, Ruah, and the Youth Affairs Council of WA.
Participants discussed the need for involvement of local leadership to help drive the solutions available, evidence-based policies, use of regional input to improve models and services and the need for timely, transparent information for decision-making.
The RRR Network will prepare a short report about the Roundtable and its discussion and share with the RRR Network community and other interested stakeholders.
Regional visits are also informing Shelter WA’s development of a regional engagement framework, a project funded by Lotterywest.
