Shelter WA congratulates the Hon. Sabine Winton MLA who will be Minister responsible for Child Protection, Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence, Community Services, and the new portfolio of Early Childhood Education.
Ms Winton is a former teacher and is the Member for Wanneroo.
Simone McGurk MLA
Former Community Services Minister Simone McGurk is now the Minister for Training, Water and Youth.
Minister McGurk has driven a number of initiatives.
All Paths Lead to a Home: Western Australia’s 10-Year Strategy on Homelessness 2020–2030, developed through her leadership and in partnership with the sector, has supported important evidence based initiatives such as the housing first support services which are delivering significant outcomes across the state.
Minister McGurk oversaw the development of a world class Homelessness Strategy and new investment into Housing First initiatives.
Under her guidance the Minister began a $2.3 million online data and case management system to make it easier for people experiencing homelessness to access appropriate accommodation and services when needed and a project supporting landlords and real estate agents to better understand the needs of women and children seeking refuge from family and domestic violence (FDV).
Shelter WA CEO Kath Snell said Minister McGurk had made a significant impact.
“There was record investment, guided by WA’s first long-term strategy to tackle homelessness,” Ms Snell said.
“It’s been a pleasure to work with Minister McGurk. Her understanding and empathy in the area of FDV ensured she supported and advocated for women and families at risk of homelessness. Minister McGurk’s passion in this area has shone, and she has tackled difficult issues of suitable funding and housing, for her tenure with this portfolio.
“We offer our thanks and wish her well in her new portfolio. Additionally, we look forward to meeting and working closely with Minister Sabine Winton, and welcome opportunities to collaborate.”
